Woodland Tomato Festival Tomato Tasting
Yolo County UC Master Gardeners

For the last 9 years the Yolo County UC Master Gardeners have been conducting free public tomato tastings at the Woodland Tomato Festival. As many as 30 varieties of Hybrid and heirloom tomatoes grown by both the Master Gardeners and growers selling at the Woodland Farmer’s Market are tasted and scored by about 200 people each year. The information we get from the tasting helps Master Gardeners select which heirloom varieties of seedlings they will be offering at their next spring plant sale, and helps the growers evaluate the varieties they are selling at the Market.

In 2016 fifteen varieties were tasted, and the top three were Chocolate Stripe, Mortgage Lifter, and Woodle Orange. Other varieties tasted were Big Rainbow, Early Girl, Fletcher, Black Seamas, Stupice, Pineapple, Beefsteak, Valencia, Carolina Gold, Paragon, Tasty Lee, and Bella Rosa.
